Scientists at SETI have been scanning the galaxy around us for the past 50 years, hoping to intercept a signal that would let us know we’re not alone in the galaxy. The premise is a simple one: if intelligent life exists in the universe then it must be curious like we are. As such, someone should be out there broadcasting, and all we need to do is listen in to hear their broadcast. As of yet there have been no confirmed extraterrestrial signals from space, but in August of 1977, SETI recorded one that still makes us wonder today: is it possible someone out there already tried to contact us?

We’ll take a look into this mystery while doing our best to maintain a neutral stance, but it’s easily understandable why such a story would create so many conflicting emotions. We all want to believe intelligent life is out there, trying to make contact with us; but when we’re offered proof we find ourselves skeptical, as a part of us also wants to believe we’re alone. It’s a tightrope we walk on, precariously balancing ourselves between the want to believe and the repercussions for doing so; and yet, that’s what makes us all human, as we constantly seek to explore and understand everything around us.
It all began in late November of 1989, with people reporting sightings of triangular UFOs flying over Belgium. At first no one took the stories seriously, but the reports continued to pile in. Months later, in March of 1990, the whole incident would take a turn that would bring it to the level of national attention, making this one of the highest regarded UFO sightings in history.
To solve the enigma we will need to push aside all of our preconceptions and analyze the facts from a scientific point of view. The obvious answer isn’t what we’re after here. Instead, we want the truth, and that will involve looking into several different theories on what these gold artifacts might actually represent.
February 25th, 1942, we were attacked by another world – or so said the papers of the time. And where did they strike? Los Angeles! If this is so, then why is it so few of us know anything about his War of the Worlds that occurred? Certainly, it’s no secret, as many aging Californians today still go on to retell what they saw occur that night. There’s also the newspaper accounts which tell of our efforts to repel the invaders. However, what made the whole event surreal was the whole one-sidedness of the event. People died that night, but only because they were injured by our own falling shells. For reasons unknown the aliens never fired back, which made many wonder if everyone might have lost their marbles and they were just seeing things.
Conspiracy theorists will delight in this discussion, as they have been saying for years that something big was on the horizon. As for the rest of us, we’re left to wonder what’s going on. The fact that DARPA is pairing off with NASA to place a permanent base on Mars alarms us the most, as DARPA is run by the United States department of defense. What does a base on Mars have to do with defending the United States?
Perhaps – a book deal? Publicity? Well, those were our first instinctual guesses, and that appears to have been the response from many other renown media sources. For many, it’s nothing more than a clever yarn garnered to grab our attention – aging veterans seeking a moment in the limelight. So, what made us change our minds?
Well, if they do, it’s almost certainly not as often as is reported. After all, if they did, then it would become obvious that the Earth has become a Route 66 freakshow on some alien culture’s map. Are we truly that interesting of a species that we would demand so much attention? If not, can we assume the opposite – that we aren’t that interesting at all?
As it turns out, the mars face is nothing more than an optical illusion, caused by a combination of the low resolution image of the Viking camera, the lighting, the angle, and the terrain. In fact, a new picture from the Mars Global Surveyor on April 8th, 2001 shows the face to be nothing more than a razed surface feature on Mars. |
