13-month-old Erica died in a snowy garden one wintry night in Edmonton, Canada, but miraculously she somehow came back to life. How is this possible? We’ll investigate the mystery and try to provide some answers.
According to the emergency room staff at Stollery Children’s Centre, young Erica ‘s heart stopped for at least 90 minutes, and maybe for as long as three hours! But was the girl really frozen solid? With her toes frozen to her jaw (she was found outside in the fetal position) and her body temperature dropped to 61F, it’s no wonder the doctor’s thought so. Still, they refused to accept the prognosis without an attempt to save the little girl’s life, and their efforts should be greatly applauded!

How is it that a 15th century book has withstood every modern attempt at deciphering its contents? Is it possible the book is an elaborate hoax, or could it be written in an encoded language we have yet to understand? If it is finally decoded, what great secrets might we unlock?
The Voynich manuscipt is a 240 page volume written by hand during the 15th century. It was named after a Polish-Lithuianian-American book dealer by the name of Wilfred M. Voynich. While we know he acquired the book in 1912, we don’t know any of the history prior to that date. So, did Wilfred Voynich propose a hoax to the world with its discovery? As it turns out, the book is authentic, as is the ink on its pages. While it’s possible the book itself holds no credibility, the hoax couldn’t be of Voynich’s doing.

At Weird-Sci we investigate many oddities, but this one just might hit the top ten list for the most peculiar. We were already aware of Munchausen Syndrome, whereas a person causes illness or injury to themselves to seek attention, but we never knew there was another side of this syndrome where another person involuntary stands in for the attention seeker. To understand how Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy (MDbP) works, we’ll need to look at an example.
We’ve chosen to illustrate how this disease works by citing a fictitious account, as most of these cases involve children and we choose to protect the innocent. While the situation given won’t be real, it will have all of the earmarks of an actual case. And so, we move onto the case of Janet and Billy Wayne.

Yes, she’s real – and no, she doesn’t live with the seven dwarfs. She is a real-live sleeping beauty that often sleeps for days at a time. Currently, the most days she has slept in a row is 13, and there is no cure in sight. What is a poisoned apple that caused her to receive this condition? Perhaps not, but scientists will be the first to tell you that they haven’t yet found out what has. Louisa Ball, a 15-year-old British girl, suffers from a rare condition known in the medical world as Kleine-Levin Syndrome. It’s also known as Sleeping Beauty Sickness for reasons you will soon understand.

Many of us might remember the movie, Firestarter, where the young girl (played by Drew Barrymore) could start fires with her mind, but was it based on a true story? As it turns out, no, it was an invention of Stephen King’s unending imagination, but there have since been claims of people (mostly adolescents) who could actually stars fires with their mind, and we decided to take a look into the one case that as yet has not been debunked.
Before we delve deeply into this story we want to make it clear to the reader that there have been many hoaxes over the years, so we’re extremely skeptical when we come across a case like this; however, real science never discredits anything without a valid explanation, and we choose to behave like real scientists. As such, we will investigate the research available and provide you with everything we know about this case.

Some say there is a zone of silence in the Mexican desert, where even a human voice is unable to permeate the air and UFOs constantly fly through the sky. As with all modern mysteries some truth is often blurred in with the mythology, making it difficult to discern fact from fiction. Yes, there really is a zone of silence in Mexico, and we’re here to provide you with the facts that can currently be verified.
The Zone of Silence, known locally as the Vertice de Trino, borders the Mexican states of Durango, Chihuahua, and Coahuila. And yes, it is very real! However, we feel the need to define what the Zone of Silence actually is – and what it isn’t.

Did you ever find yourself thinking, “Gee, that piece of paper sure looks mighty tasty!”. Well, if you have, you just might be suffering from an eating disorder known as Pica. So to speak, Pica is a compulsive disorder that revolves around eating things that have no nutritional value, such as cardboard, coal, rocks, dirt, etc. What makes a person want to do this?
It’s a difficult question for most of us to answer, as the condition doesn’t even make sense to those who suffer from it. One minute you could be writing a letter, and the next you might find yourself chewing on the pencil and swallowing it. However, scientists believe they might have unraveled the mystery. As it turns out, it’s a case of body over mind, whereas the brain fails to communicate to the body just how bad of an idea it is being presented with.

Can people actually see into the future? If you’re asking us, we’ll freely admit we’re up in the air about the whole topic, but we’re leaning toward the side that wants to believe it’s possible. So, where do we go from here? Well, it so happens that our sister site, Alcwi, is hosting an experiment to see if people really can see into the future. Maybe, just maybe, their finally willing to give fringe science a chance. Bah! That’s our neighborhood! In reality, they are just performing a test to prove precognition isn’t real – so let’s prove to them otherwise!

Few stories get any stranger than the tale of two green-skinned children who mysteriously appeared on August 1887, huddled inside a cave. Were they aliens from another world, beings from another dimension, or something altogether different? We’ll examine the clues until we arrive at what we believe to be the truth.
The earliest known account of this story is made in 1965, published in John Macklin’s Strange Destinies. The fact that the story can’t be traced back any further already makes one wonder if it’s just a fanciful tale, but we’ll follow the breadcrumbs to see where they lead. After all, true oddities occur every day, and quite often there is some truth to be had in such stories.

Of all the oddities in the world, ball lightning could possibly be the strangest. To this day, scientists still can’t tell us exactly how it works, but there are many explanations to be had. Ball lightning can be thought of as a round ball of lightning that floats through the air for several seconds and then dissipates – sometimes in a violent manner.
As it appears differently to everyone, many have questioned the existence of the phenomenon, considering the reports of eyewitnesses as too differing to be reliable; however, enough people of reason have seen the mystical ball of lightning that we can say with certainty this phenomenon actually does exist.
