The Legacy Of Bigfoot
To start off our voodoo science series we will look at a mythical creature that keeps popping its head out of the woods (literally), and yet, manages to evade capture. Known by many names, this creature is one of the epic mythologies of modern times. Bigfoot, Sasquatch, Yeti, the abominable snowman … these are all names given to the living missing link between man and ape.
Though there are earlier stories of hairy apes, the first widely known sighting occurred in 1884. Interestingly enough, Charles Darwin, the man responsible for introducing us to the possible link between apes and men, lived between 1809 and 1882. Is it a coincidence that these sightings rise right after this man’s death? Did we find ourselves looking so hard for the missing link that we manufactured it within our own minds?
Let’s look at the proof! After all, there must be something to all of this or we would have stopped believing long ago, right? Here’s some pictures of Bigfoot to get the conversation rolling:
Some of these pictures are obvious fakes and can be easily dismissed, but there are a few that make one wonder, and it’s been these pictures that have been the cornerstone in arguing for Bigfoot’s existence. And then there’s the physical evidence … footprints … how can we debunk those? And if that isn’t enough, there are the videos like this one…
Harley Hoffman: ‘Science is an attitude of questioning … not doubting … but questioning. Science may or may not ever get the proof that will satisfy it.’
This statement is the pinnacle of voodoo science. We aren’t allowed to have doubts. Instead, we are supposed to eagerly accept what we see and ask questions. After all, if we’re doubters then we’re not real scientists right? Fair enough … let’s ask some questions.
Questions Needing to Be Answered
Where is the physical proof? Pictures and videos, while entertaining, are easily faked. Let’s face it, anyone can jump into a monkey costume and lumber about. However, a creature the size of a human must leave something behind for us to process.
What would we need, as scientists, to believe? Footprints? Again, we know these can be fakes. No, we need something more tangible. We need fur; we need bones; we need feces (yuck! but it would help!). And what would any of these things prove? Glad you asked!
If a furry animal moves through the woods it inevitably sheds some hair. As hair is unique to each species, we would expect the hair of a Bigfoot to be different from our own and different from an apes. This alone would be enough to get us to reconsider, and yet, we have none. Why? Is it that difficult to go back the next day and search the area where Bigfoot was spotted? Fear factor … okay … we get it. But what about the people who find the footprints? Clearly they aren’t afraid, as they make plaster casts out of the footprints. So, why not search the immediate area for some fur? All furry creatures shed fur. Bigfoot is very furry. Therefore, Bigfoot must shed fur as he walks through the forest. It’s inevitable!
And what about bones? After all, if a creature dies in the forest it leaves behind bones, right? And the bones of a Bigfoot would be very out of place in any North American forest as there are no apes in North America. So, where are the bones? Given the number of sightings there must be a sizable population living and dying out there. So, are they burying their dead? Perhaps. But as most of the sightings are of solo creatures one can assume they would be mostly solitary creatures, which means many must die on their own. And unless they can sense their immediate doom and bury themselves, there must be bones to be found. So, where are they?
And what about feces? Something that big needs to poo, right?
We know … we know. You think we’ve went off on a silly tangent, but we really haven’t. After all, we track bears by their feces, so why not track a Bigfoot the same way? And should we happen to find any you can bet it would contain plant, and possibly, raw animal matter. However, if it contains portions of Chinese food, then we can almost assume it did not come from a Bigfoot, unless it’s one that scavenges our garbage cans, in which case it wouldn’t be as shy as we were once told and then should be as prevalent (and detectable) as the black bear.
So, Why Do We Still Believe?
That’s the best question, and the answer is that the media allows us to do so. For instance, do a Google search for “‘real Bigfoot sighting” and you will see plenty of them. Of course, many of them are pranks, but a few appear to be real encounters. Is this enough to continue fueling our belief? Evidently so. But the real reason we continue to believe, despite no real physical proof, is because we want to. Scaring ourselves has become a national pastime. In fact, it’s become a billion dollar business worldwide. That’s why the reports will never end, and actual proof will never be found.
Which brings to light another question … are all sightings hoaxes? And the answer … yes and no.
While we honestly believe all sights are perpetrated as a hoax, we don’t agree that all people reporting such sightings are part of that elaborate ruse. In fact, we definitely agree that some people are convinced they saw a Bigfoot, and in that right, it has become real to them. And from that stance, we can’t portray these people as hoaxers as they are only reporting what they saw and failing to understand they have been duped. Then again, perhaps some do, but by the time the media swoops down upon them to record their encounter they are too embarrassed to admit they’ve been fooled.
And that’s why the mythology continues … as it’s fun to think of a big furry human-like creature running around the woods and scaring people. And while we must move on to debunk this myth, it is a bit painful to do so, as many of the staff here at Weird Science do remember when, as children, we thought Bigfoot was real. It’s kind of like saying goodbye to an old friend. But it’s something we must do, in order for all of us to move past the mythology.
The Case Against Bigfoot
The biggest case against Bigfoot’s existence is a lack of solid evidence to prove it exists. All we ask for is physical proof, and all we can find is videos such as this one:
Now, if someone is interested enough to share this evidence with the world then why aren’t they out there looking for the fur from this beast? The video clearly shows where the creature was, and while the photographers were brave enough to retrieve the camera they never checked the site for any fur remnants. Of course, if the creature was a human in a suit then it’s plausible no fur exists to be found, which we suspect to be the case.
To add to our evidence drawer, there isn’t a single bone or scrap of fur that has been handed to a scientist to be identified, in which they could only admit it must be from a Bigfoot. Also, there is never fur found in any Bigfoot footprint, and such a hairy beast walking through muddy soil and leaving a footprint would inevitably leave some fur behind. You don’t believe us? Take a furry dog (like a chow chow) out for a walk through a muddy baseball field after a rain and look at the tracks when you’re done. What you will find is some great footprints. And … if you look carefully enough … some of the chow chow’s fur. Why, because mud is somewhat sticky, and it will inevitably latch onto some of the loose fur and pull it to the ground. We’re not looking for a fur coat here, just one strand that can be tested. So, where is it?
Also, there are no skeletal remains. The rebuttal always given is that scavengers scatter the bones, which we can almost accept. However, we find a lot of bear and deer bones, so a creature the size of Bigfoot should leave some bones behind when it dies. And as a Bigfoot looks different from the other creatures of North America, it makes sense some of these bones would be readily identifiable – especially the skulls.
In fact, this would be the ultimate proof … a Bigfoot skull! Even without the rest of the body, this alone would identify a Bigfoot and make it very real. So, where is it? In over one hundred years of sightings, not one single skull – that in itself debunks Bigfoot.
And if anything, scavenging animals would make it easier to make such a find. As the skull would be pulled from the body by scavengers it would inevitably be found by hikers and campers who might assume it was human. They would then report a murder in the woods and an investigation would be started. And before too long they would make a startling discovery … this was not the skull of a human! So, why hasn’t something like this occurred?
The fact is … with so many believers in existence, real proof would have surfaced by now. The absence of said proof tells us Bigfoot is a hoax – mythical folklore – and should be laid to rest for good. So, you can relax tonight in your tent, knowing that beast outside rummaging through the woods is your friends having fun at your expense, or perhaps a black bear looking for food (in which case being a little afraid wouldn’t be such a bad idea).
And there you have it … Bigfoot debunked! Of course, we’re willing to hear what you think. Have you actually witnessed a Bigfoot and want to tell your side of the story? Do you agree that Bigfoot is only a myth? We’re willing to listen to any and all opinions. The comment box below awaits all of your replies …

Just wondering, what are the chances of Bigfoot having hair like a human, like poodles were bred for? I’m sure there would still be some hair that sheds but not as much, when investigating whats the chances of actually finding a piece of hair in a large area probably in the woods or something close to that?

Given the fact that crime investigators often find human hairs at the scene of a crime and Bigfoot is hairy all over, the odds should actually be very high. With any sighting made we have a narrow focus of where to look, so finding Bigfoot fur shouldn’t really be all that difficult – provided Bigfoot exists.

HAHAHA … I suppose it would make sense for a Bigfoot to write an article debunking the myth of Bigfoot. Yep, that would stop all of those hunters from looking for me.

Saying Bigfoot isn’t real makes us unpopular with the believers, but we can’t subscribe to the belief when irrefutable proof should be so easy to acquire … and yet … never seems to materialize.
Pawprints in the mud often contain pieces of fur, so why would a hairy beast such as a Bigfoot never leave any fur in its tracks? We’re not saying that every footprint should be fur-covered, but at least one should contain a stray hair.

i do believe in bigfoot, but at the same time i have trouble believing. why? because although there are all these photos not all are real, while some may be real, but we will never know what is real and whats not will we? my question is this though, if U were to discover a bigfoot, what u do about it?

Last year I saw “what” i believed was a female bigot. The creature I saw did not have it body completely covered in fur. It however had hair on the body well in excess then any human I seen in real life. Since then in watch shows about big foot hairs have been found. Some had been id as human while others have been believed to ape like.
Since I also like weird stuff and UFO as well. Giant bones of humans have been found.

could it be that we are ignoring the fact that everything and everyone are always evolving and bigfoot is caught in middle

I don’t have a doubt that there are billions of living beings that humans don’t know about, and I think this is for the best. Because lets say Big Foot, or the Yeti was discovered and caught, humans would just put it behind bars for examination just like they do with all the other animals and what good would this be?
