We already know what you’re thinking … Weird-Sci is about to debunk another legendary creature myth. Well guess what – Zombies really exist! No, really, we aren’t pulling your leg here.
In fact, we’re going to share with you where they can be found, how they become zombies, and how they can be turned back into humans. Does this all sound like a bad horror movie? Well, relax, as we plan on looking at this scientifically, which means no (ahem, please excuse the term) voodoo science.
Before we start on this journey; however, we’d like to make something clear to all of our readers. While voodoo is used to create zombies, as a religion it has very little to do with black magic. As a religion, voodoo is more about protection from evil spirits than it is doing harm to others. In fact, voodoo is rarely used to wish harm on others.
Haiti, The Land Of Zombies
As a rule, if you’re looking to find a zombie you’ll need to go to Haiti; however, don’t expect one to be created one for you. In fact, you’re more than likely to be made into a zombie yourself if you try to force the point. So, you may ask, where do you go to find a zombie. Well, first you will need to find a Bokor, a voodoo (voodoun) priest that performs black magic rituals.
The Bokor is often summoned by your friends or relatives when they believe you have become lazy, dishonest, or have annoyed others. While those might seem like minor offenses to us, the Haitians take them all very seriously, to the point that they are sometimes willing to make zombies of people to teach them a lesson.
So, how is a zombie created?
A Bokor mixes a preparation of toxic fish, animals, and plants, creating a powerful nerve toxin that is administered into open wounds or the victim’s food. From there, the symptoms quickly appear: rabid pules, headache, diarrhea, respiratory distress, the coma – or death.
For those misfortunate enough to lapse into a coma, the terror has only begun. As they appear to be dead, the body is prepared for a funeral, with the person trapped inside of their body and aware of all that is happening. Fortunately, no fluids are drained from the body, as they are in most modern counties. In fact, this draining of the fluids might have started as a certainty that dead people were actually … dead.
Two days later the Bokor returns to the cemetery where the victim was buried alive and administers a different mix of drugs called a zombie cucumber. This awakens the victim, while keeping them in a controllable state. Thankful to be alive again, the newly created zombie gladly becomes the Bokor’s slave.
They Don’t Like Brains
Contrary to belief, zombies don’t eat brains, nor do they crave them. It’s unknown where this myth started, but it’s totally untrue. Also, real zombies can’t be considered the living dead as they haven’t actually ever died. In a sense, they are the unfortunate ones who survived. So, why do we fear zombies so much?
The Haitians certainly don’t fear zombies. In fact, their fear is being made into a zombie. As the poison is easily inserted into anyone’s food, just the thought of becoming a zombie is normally enough to warrant good behavior between Haitians. Also, Haitians have learned a simple way to prevent zombies from coming back to life, by stabbing a corpse in the heart or cutting off its head, the family insures that their loved one can never be risen by a Bokor to become their zombie slave.
Another thing to note is that Haitians don’t typically create zombies of people out of revenge, but rather, to teach them a powerful lesson they’ll never forget. And there are few among us who wouldn’t change our ways after experiencing such a horrid punishment.
Zombies Exist
Regardless of what you’ve been told, zombies do actually exist, but they are nothing like those portrayed in the movies. They also aren’t the living-dead, and they aren’t looking for a few brains to snack on. If anything, they are quietly serving their Bokor, and are happy just to be alive.
This just goes to prove that, while many stories of legendary creatures aren’t true, there exist a few that are. And while Hollywood doesn’t always get everything right, but they’re correct about the sluggish and disoriented movement. They’re also correct that it’s a voodoo priest that creates the zombie.
So, if you happen to go to Haiti and you meet a man who claims to be a Bokor, stay on his good side – you’re life might depend on it …
